One two-month voyage around the Australian Coast was terminated days after the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was stranded by the ship on a isolated coastal location.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the excursion for a break. The ship left without her and returned after some time after the personnel realised the woman was missing.

An extensive hunt located her body the subsequent day.

Officials are investigating the tragedy, together with police and the state coroner.

The CEO of the shipping company announced that passengers and crew on the ship were notified that the remainder of the voyage had been terminated due to the "unfortunate death and previous mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the travelers via specially arranged planes".

Authorities also issued an updated communication, and said they had "provided a notice to the Commander" preventing any new passengers from boarding the liner.

The ship caters for up to 120 passengers with 46 staff, according to company data. It was purpose-built to access distant locations of Australia's shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - minor craft used to take passengers on shore trips.

Incidents of this nature are infrequent, and liners have procedures to record which passengers are embarking or getting off, according to maritime specialists.
