“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
Historical Context for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
