Astronaut Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured experts in different industries.
